Amazon Is Trying to Patent Paying With a Selfie

Amazon isn’t the first company to test this either.

Amazon is looking to patent the ability to authenticate a payment using a selfie, according to a newly-filed patent. First spotted by technology news site Re/code, the patent outlines how an Amazon shopper would authorize a purchase using a photo of oneself instead of a password.
Selfie pay is designed to ease the process of verifying transactions as consumers make more purchases online and via mobile devices. It’s also thought to be more secure that punching in a password or PIN.
As Amazon explains in the filing, facial recognition is more secure than entering passwords, which can be stolen. Entering long passwords, the company says, can also be cumbersome on mobile devices. Instead, Amazon suggests “a computing device might capture an image of a user and analyze that image to attempt to recognize the user using facial recognition software.”
Amazon isn’t the first company to test this either.
Amazon isn’t the first company to be experimenting with “pay by selfie” technology. MasterCard began testing its facial recognition capabilities in 2015. When making a purchase online from a merchant requiring identity verification, cardholders can authorize transactions by holding up smartphone cameras while as if taking selfies and blinking.
USAA, a financial services organization for U.S. military members and their families, also started utilizing selfies as logins last year, while Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is working on a facial recognition service that would let customers pay for purchases just by looking at a screen.

Linux Kernel 4.5 officially arrives, has major improvements for AMD GPU drivers

The Linux Kernel 4.5 is now officially released and is up for download right now

Linux kernel 4.5 is officially here after being under development for over two months. Linux kernel 4.5 received a total of seven Release Candidate builds since January 25, 2016, with the last one having been officially announced by Linus Torvalds on March 6.
So what exactly is so promising about Linux Kernel 4.5? It includes the implementation of initial support for the AMD PowerPlay power management technology, and also brings in high performance to the AMD GPU open-source driver for Radeon GPUs. As a result, it will improve scalability in the free space handling of the Btrfs file system, and better epoll multithreaded scalability.
Furthermore, GCC, or GNU Compiler Collection’s UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer (UBSan) is now supported in Linux kernel 4.5 by using ‘-fsanitize=undefined,’ which is the memory controller now offers proper memory accounting of sockets.
Another key area in which Linux Kernel 4.5 brings an improvement is the addition of a copy_file_range system. This system implements support for copying files without the need to transfer any data through userspace and if you want a better term, it is called copy offloading.
If you want to download Linux kernel 4.5 right now, then the link has been given right at the bottom and will navigate you to the desired link.

Android N: Five best features to be excited about on new OS

Google has whet our appetites for Android 7.0 after unexpectedly dropping the developer version on us, causing everyone to begin speculating what its N-monikered software release will eventually be called. Nougat? Nutella? Nectar? Place your bets now.
We won't know for sure until Google I/O on 18 May, but in the meantime the company has given us a taster of what to expect from its next confectionery-flavoured OS. Here, we've picked out five features we can't wait to hear more about.
More Quick Settings
Android N will give users more freedom to choose which apps appear in the Quick Settings drop-down menu. This means that you can arrange the grid to prioritise the settings you use most, or add and remove icons as you see fit.
Bundled notifications
Android N will allow users to get all their alerts from one app grouped together into a single, bundled notifications, reducing on-screen clutter and making it easier to wade through multiple messages from different apps at once. You'll be able to expand bundled notifications into individual messages by tapping the banner with two fingers or by hitting the newly-added expansion button.
Multi-window
Samsung has offered multi-window on its Galaxy Note devices in the past, but now Google is looking to integrate this functionality into apps from Android N and beyond. Multi-window allows you to have two apps running side by side in split-screen mode. You can resize each window manually as well as drag and drop text, images and other data from one window to the other – essentially like a touch-based copy and paste function. It will also enable apps to run over the top of Android TV interfaces in picture-in-picture mode, meaning you'll be able to watch a video while interacting with another app at the same time.
Reply inside notifications
Taking cues from Android Wear, Android N will allow you to respond to messages and other notifications from within the notification banner itself. When you receive a notification, you'll be able simply tap the 'Reply' button, removing the need to leave the app you're currently in.

Enhanced Doze
Doze was a much-welcomed addition to Android 6.0 Marshmallow that shuts down background tasks while your device remains idle for a certain about of time in order to save battery. In Android N, Doze is activated every time your device's display turns off, which should let you eke even more power out of your mobile.

iPhone SE to launch on 21 March

Apple has officially sent out invites for an event next week at the company’s Cupertino headquarters in California where it is expected to introduce quite a few devices along with some updates too. But just as always, the star of the event is the upcoming rumoured 4-inch iPhone, which is currently rumoured to be called the iPhone SE. Eager fans as well as curious critics want to know as to what Apple will offer in its first launch event of the year.
Let’s take a closer look at the rumoured specifications of the upcoming iPhone SE.

First things first, the device will be called SE and not iPhone 5se. The company has decided to drop ‘5’ from the name. This means, the iPhone SE will be the second iPhone after the original 1st generation model without a number in its name. In addition, it is believed that the change in the name is to simplify the iPhone lineup as bringing back an iPhone 5 variant during iPhone 6 life-cycle may confuse customers. The iPhone SE will reportedly replace the iPhone 5s and could sell at a similar price point as well.

Design and Specifications
In terms of design, the device is said to be similar to the iPhone 6 models. It is reportedly said to sport a power button on the side. It was only with the iPhone 6 models, that the company started opting for side power button due to the length of the device. Hence, the upcoming smartphone will be almost the same as the iPhone 6, but only fitted into a 4-inch form factor.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known to make accurate predictions about Apple products, states that the iPhone SE is likely to be similar to the iPhone 5s but with a slightly more curved 2.5D glass. For the rest of the specifications, the device is likely to get a 12MP rear snapper, instead of the previously rumoured 8MP rear camera.  Powering it all will be an Apple A8 chipset with the M8 co-processor that will also come from the currently available iPhone 6 models.
It is expected to offer 16GB and 64GB storage capacities, and a 1642mAh battery. The connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.2, Live Photos support and more. The device won’t get 3D Touch, which will remain exclusive to the iPhone 6s.

Expected Price
Kuo has also mentioned about the cost of the device, which he predicts could be somewhere between $400 and $500 in the US. Needless to say, the lower price point is aimed at mid to low segment and could help Apple drive sales in emerging countries like China and also India. Lastly, it is also beleived that the 4-inch iPhone shipments will grow by 131 percent year-over-year to 37 million units by 2016. The research forecasts a lower shipment of 12 million units from 18-20 million units as it believes customers who favor a small-size iPhone may purchase the cheaper iPhone 5s.

Amazon Education: Amazon working on platform aimed at teachers and students

Amazon is working on a platform aimed at teachers and students.
The platform will enable educators to host and share course materials and the company has already started targeting teachers with something called the Amazon Education Wait List.
A message on the site reads: "Someday soon, educators everywhere will have free and unlimited access to first-class course materials from a revolutionary platform. Get on the wait list to be notified when the platform is available for all schools and classrooms!"
Apple and Google already have similar offerings therefore Amazon's decision to follow suit makes perfect sense, especially given it's huge catalogue of books, its publishing and now its televisual and film making wings.
What's more, unlike either of its direct competitors in the space, Amazon's Fire tablets are directly aimed at younger users in terms of functionality and affordability.
